A bit of old art...

Nostalgia creeped in for my mother when we decided to do the traditional halwa jewellery for Sankrant this year for my sister.

According to age old traditions of Maharashtrians, a new bride is supposed to wear this traditional "Halwa jewellery"on her first Sankrant festival.

My sister who was always enthusiastic about dressing & dolling up wasn't ready to let this chance away. Me being at home post partum decided to utilise this moment and along with my mother thought of creating this beautiful jewellery pieces. My mother had made them for my sankrant and I was already in love with them.

I myself wasn't sure about they might turn out since it is considered to be an old art known only to dadis and nanis of ages. But in this vast encompassing world of Internet I discovered videos and blogs about how to do it and we started making progress.

To give it in short "Halwa" are tiny sugar coated sweets that come in all sizes from til(sesame) to rice puffs (murmura)... they are embedded between two threads and are held in place by beads and other decoratives.

We did all the basic jewellery including the mangalsutra, nath, bangles, necklace, earrings and what not...

Needless to say it was appreciated and turned out very good (my vanity)....

Here's a look of what we did... and my lovely sister all decked up....
